NODA Review
With the overture came the knowledge that the wonderful Cole Porter score was in the safe hands of Jeff Rimmer and I was not wrong. The set was good, one which was new to me but it worked well.
The dance routines for the Angels and sailors came across well, especially the tap numbers, and, on the whole, with one or two exceptions, I liked the very colourful costumes. It was a very enjoyable show.
Billy Crocker was played by Dave Smith opposite two young ladies who were on top form. Laura Fegan played Hope and we had a knockout performance from Helen Illingworth as Reno,. I enjoyed the characterisation of Eric Flectcher who was a very good Moonface and also the solo dance which I do believe was in the last touring show; well done!
Erma was given some "umph" by Elaine Cox and Neil Butler made an excellent Sir Evelyn Oakleigh. I also enjoyed the performances of Tony Adamson and Ann Maria Taylor who played Elisha and Evangeline.
Ian Culshaw was the Captain and the Purser was James Butler. He could have had more comedy put in his role, however. It was nice to see Eric Rimmer back on stage again as the Minister in charge of Liam Jones and Michael Hughes who played Luke and John.
It is always good to see an influx of young people and the "Angels " were no exception with Kimberley Russell ‚Beth Schofield, Gill Thornton and Louise Webster along with the four sailors namely Peter Brennan, Matt Casson, Philip Makin and Dan McWaters: all bodes well for the future.
My thanks to the cast and to the society for your hospitality. Well done, also, to Gaynor on her maiden voyage!
