Director’s Notes
The first performance of Oklahoma! was on March 31st 1943– an incredible 65 years ago. Despite being of pensionable
age the show is as fresh and as lively as ever. It is no wonder,
as it has everything – a good story, plenty of comedy, some
dark and dramatic moments, more than one ‘love story’, a
host of hummable tunes and endearing characters who thrill
and amuse us. It has deservedly won dozens of awards and was revived by the Royal
National Theatre in 1998 due to its status as an ‘all time classic’. It has been an
enjoyable challenge to work on and I owe thanks to this enthusiastic company, to Jeff
Rimmer for his brilliant musical direction, to Gill Thornton for her valuable contributions
as Chorus Mistress and to Betty Hall and Elaine Cox for their breathtaking
choreography.
