It gives me great pleasure to welcome you to this production. SOUTH PACIFIC is a classic show from the acknowledged Masters of the musical Rodgers and Hammerstein.
It may be a well worn cliché to say that a show has everything but in the case of SOUTH PACIFIC - it is true! It has wonderful songs, a good plot, not one but two love stories, colourful scenery, exuberant dancing and a skilful blend of humour and pathos, and comedy and drama.
To work on such a show is a challenge and an honour - how can you make an old and well-loved show into something fresh without spoiling the near perfect ingredients? I think the answer lies in trusting the material provided and enjoying the quality of Rodgers and Hammerstein's work as if it had never been played before.
This programme note gives me the opportunity to publicly acknowledge those without whom there would be no show. My thanks and admiration particularly go to my talented and supportive production team - to Paul Williams as Rehearsal Pianist for his breathtaking talent and patience; to Claire Morris a Musical Director of quality whose enthusiasm and willingness has been an inspiration to me and to Pat Robertson my hard working choreographer for her lively and spirited dance routines.
My thanks, of course, also extend to the whole company which has welcomed me, listened to me and has willingly given me its unfailing talent and Support.
And finally my thanks to you the audience for coming to the show - may the magic of Bali Ha'i sweep you up and cast its spell once again.
Enjoy this classic show!
