Reviews - Colin McGenty, NODA North West
One of my favourite shows but not always done justice to but this was good and what a superb set. The orchestra sounded thin in the overture but it improved as the night went on.
Neil Butler, although young for the part of Emile, did a reasonable job. Opposite we had a newcomer to the society and if this performance is anything to go by they will be hoping that she stays. Helen Illingworth's Nellie was a refreshing and bright performance.
The male chorus gave us a good sound if only eight in number and Luther Billis was one of the major hits of the evening although ill health had hindered his run up to the first night, doctor theatre once again to our aid. But congratulations were in order to Dave Lee for his performance.
Pam Ashcroft's Bloody Mary was well done and came across very well as did Stephen Middleton as Jo Cable. I enjoyed "Happy Talk" and Jo's "Younger Than Springtime" with Liat played by the pretty Sarah Culshaw.
These were supported well by Eric Rimmer and Tony Adamson who played the management or should I say Captain Brackett and Cmdr. Harbison. And a nice little cameo from David Cox as Buss Adams.
As the show was about to end we were treated to the best singing I have heard from this society as the full company sang a reprise of both "Some Enchanted Evening" and "Bali Ha'i", well conducted by Claire Morris.
Well done the Chorus and all back stage for a good production my congratulation to all concerned.
