NODA Review

The one thing that makes Oklahoma! unique is that there is no opening chorus - just one person on stage and a voice off. Unfortunately, Molly Jackson, in her production, found it necessary to improve on Rodgers and Hammerstein, and had the chorus singing the overture front of curtain. This destroyed the opening as the chorus should not appear until the middle of the first act.

Anita Davies gave a creditable performance as Aunt Eller and Tony Kelly as Curly was very good and sang well. His Laurey lacked feeling and her singing was quite poor. An excellent Ali Hakim, (Mark Duffy), and Paula Copeland managed Ado Annie quite well. Will Parker was a bit too over the top and played too much to the audience. We are onlookers and should not get involved as though it were pantomime.

In the ballet, there were no cowmen dancers, and, unfortunately, the audience were laughing in parts when it should have been a poignant piece of choreography. Edna Lally's orchestra had a hard time keeping together with themselves and the players. There did not appear to be any harmony singing. This production was quite disappointing after this society's last success.
