NODA Review
In this day and age, Sandy Wilson's The Boyfriend has to be tackled with a certain amount of tongue-in-cheek. This production by Neil Townsend certainly had the lightness, charm and wit Which Wilson intended. The show also need youth and vigour and this it had aplenty.
Paula Harrison's performance as Maisie was a delight. She was ably supported by Jacquie Padden, Lynn Vincent and Laura Hoye as Dulcie, Fay and Nancy. Suzanne Holme's Polly Browne was suitably charming and Philip Makin as Tony Brockhurst was perfect casting. Gaynor Hale was a superb Hortense. David Bentham gave a wonderful performance as Madame Dubonnet. The You Don't Want To Play With Me Blues with Tony Adamson as Percival Browne was a masterly piece of comic timing. The 'Boys', Matthew Casson, Mark Duffy and Michael Cloherty danced and sang well with their respective partners.
The singing throughout was excellent and I did like the orchestra, under the direction of Edna Lally. Situated at the back, it gave the singers a better chance of being heard as quite a few of the numbers are lightweight.
Paula Harrison did a wonderful job as choreographer. The costumes by the society and Masquerade (Newton-le-Willows) were lovely. A most enjoyable evening.
