Looking back through several years' editions of NODA North West News it was noticeable that Camelot hardly appears in the listings of future shows, no doubt underlining the difficulties which it presents to a company. Reading the history of the show, which required cutting by over an hour and a half after the opening production in Toronto, suggests that despite the quality of the musical score all concerned were not too happy with the finished product. Nevertheless it finally achieved commercial success and I recall a magical small cast production at Liverpool Playhouse about 13 years ago, so I was anxious to be reacquainted with it.
It was therefore a bold venture by Maghull and while all the problems inherent in this musical were not totally overcome they gave an enjoyable performance. There is some difficulty in moving from the light-hearted and romantic first act to the tragedy of the second half and it was perhaps in the more serious aspects that the major principals came into their own.
Arthur was played by Tony Kelly and Guenevere by Lynne Lee with Dave Lee as Lancelot. Tony Adamson gave a well acted Pelinore though I would have liked to see the humour of the character more to the fore. There was a particularly good account of the villainous Mordred by Matthew Casson, with Patricia Robertson as Morgan le Fay. Pam Ashcroft gave her strong voice to both Nimue and the Ballad Singer and Tom Adamson was Merlyn.
The major Knight characters were David Cox as Sir Dinadan, Alan McHugh as Sir Lionel and Ian Culshaw as Sir Sagramore. Young Mark Pollit spoke out well as Tom of Warwick in the final scene.
A feature of the original was the magnificent (if
anachronistic!) costumes - the show was dubbed Costalot - so the score provides
for the chorus to do rather a lot of processing. Fortunately Maghull had dressed
their chorus well with the addition of some spectacular head-dresses and chorus
and dancers contributed well to the overall picture.
