NODA Review
An excellent production directed by Eric Rimmer and choreographed by Gaynor Hale.
Martin Parry gave a good, all-round, performance as Kipps, partnered by Melanie Lawson as a quite forceful Ann, singing with a clear voice and making the most of her, sometimes acerbic, lines. The three shop boys, Buggins, Pearce and Pornick were well played by Philip Martin, Neil Culshaw and Matt Carson, each bringing out the individual characteristics they were ably supported by the shop girls played by Paula Harrison, Natalie Steele and Jaquie Padden - all good singers and dancers.
Tony Adamson gave a wonderful, over-the-top, performance as Chitterlow, ever line delivered like a true thespian and very "biff" resounding through the theatre - marvellous! Mark Duffy was an excellent young Walsingham, a truly manipulative, upper-class snob with facial expressions to match. Davida Bentham was a delightful Mrs Walsingham, so dignified and self-assured. Molly Jackson as Mrs Botting did not quite come up to her usual standard. Her delivery was, at times, indistinct. Suzanne Holmes is a lovely actress and made the most of her role as Helen Walsingham. Les Hampson and Tom Adamson were ideal as Mr. Carshott and Mr. Shalford - very good supporting performances.
The all-singing, all-dancing production numbers were well managed by the company under the baton of musical director, Wedna Lally, who managed chorus and orchestra with great assurance.
Many of the costumes, all very colourful, were in need of a good pressing - especially the men's striped jackets which were badly creased.
This company exudes enthusiaam which certainly transmitted itself to a very appreciative audience.
