NODA Review

Not an easy show to produce because it is so dated but with judicial cutting by permission of the rights holders Neil Townsend managed to inject pace and sparkle to this musical loosely based on the Washington socialite Perle Mesta. I am indebted to Tom Adamson from the society who always traces the origins and background of the shows for the programme, not an easy task. this is the story of Mrs. Sally. Adams " the hostess with the Mostest" and her travels as ambassador to the mythical country of Lichtenburg;.

Jacquie Wale as Sally Adams was excellent although not of strong singing voice the radio mic' helped her enormously. She gave a bright and humorous performance in the leading role. Arnold Gorse playing Cosmo Constantine showed his expertise as an actor with a lovely deep resonance to his voice. Good solid performances were given by Ian Culshaw and Eric Rimmer as Secretary of State and Congressman Wilkins respectively. Les Hampson as Senator Brocklebank, Charlie Formby as Senator Gallagher were excellent, particularly singing They Like Ike. Kenneth Gibson played by Martin Parry, partnered by Hannah Hall as the Princess Maria were suitably matched and Hannah's singing was very good. As this was her first leading role I am sure we shall see a lot more of her. Mark Duffy playing Pemberton Maxwell was probably the best I have ever seen him, he extracted all the humour from this part. Philip Makin made the most of the small part of Court Chamberlain. Tony Adamson was a pompous Sebastian and Patricia Robertson and Tom Adamson were suitably cast as Grand Duchess and Grand Duke. Edna Lally's orchestra played the Irving Berlin music with pace and chorus work was well controlled. Although not overloaded with dancing, choreography was nicely arranged by Gaynor Hale. As always the beautiful costumes were by Betty Avery (Masquerade of Newton-le-Willows. Efficient scene changes and good lighting enhanced the evening.
