NODA Review

This show was very warmly received the night I attended. The set was one of the best I have seen and we had a well conducted orchestra, although I would question the tempo taken in one or two numbers. The costumes were colourful and all the props you would expect for this show were there but not always used to their best effect. Although space on stage is at a premium when you have a tab scene I felt that we lost a great deal with the kitchen scene. It was well sung but where was the picture? Straight lines do nothing to help and the dressing scene at the end of the show was lost because of its positioning!

It was disappointing as this is a very enthusiastic society and the show contained several lovely performances. Bill Snibson (Neil Townsend) and Sally Smith (Melanie Lawson), played off each other well. Sally, I thought, could have been a little more cockney so the contrast is greater at the end when she's seen Professor Higgins, but still a very nice performance. Pam Ashcroft's Duchess was commanding portrayal; Sir John was played by Charlie Formby and Parchaster was well handled by Les Hampson. Jacquie Padden's Lady Jaqueline was something else: well done!. But, for me, the performance of the night was that of Mark Duffy as The Hon. Gerald Bolingbroke - a wonderful characterisation. The supporting cast all did very well. Again Sir Jasper was not given enough to do and why he didn't stay in his wheelchair for the finale, I don't know! To the society I say, "well done." It was an entertaining evening. Keep that enthusiasm going - I look forward to Carousel .
