NODA Review

A popular show in the 1950s this is a story of a worker/management dispute. Mark Duffy played the part of Sid quite well despite having a bad throat. He was partnered by Melanie Pearson who was well cast as Babe Williams. I found Neil Townsend's Hines uncomfortable to watch. He had been directed to play the part more as a buffoon rather than the sharp and slick character generally associated with this role. He is the time-study man but he is also in love with Gladys the bosses secretary. Here was a good performance by Gaynor Hale both well-sung and danced. Carol Kennedy did not come up to the mark as Mabel and the drunk scene during 'Hernando's Hideaway' lacked conviction. Tony Adamson as Mr. Hasler was good as the minor roles.

The big dancing numbers were excellently choreographed by Sarah Bentham but a word of warning. Members on stage are not covered by insurance if they fall off something that is not meant to be stood on i.e. a chair. I hope the young lady in question was not hurt but please remember this in future. During the number 'There Once Was a Man' there was excessive movement so much so that the principals got out of breath during the number. This is the type of show which needs a band rather than a full blown orchestra but I found Edna Lally's ensemble making some very strange noises and rather too slow. The production by Davida Bentham was very well received.
