NODA Review
Enthusiasm is an essential ingredient when performiung an old standard such as White Horse Inn and the society proved well capable and able to tackle the music, especially the difficult This Is The Season. I did enjoy Neil Townsend's Leopold. He sang effectively and, as it is basically a light-hearted role, he made full ise of the comedy. Irene Halliday made a good Josepha, controlling her inn with confidence.
The full comedy potential of Gretal and Sigismund was realised by Paula Copeland and Martin Parry. John Avery was an excellent Sutton partnered by Laura Hoye as Ottoline. I wish that Anita Davies had been more definite in her singing of Kathi, the Postwoman. She seemed nervous and that projected into her voice - and there were some very strange notes. Minor roles of Grinkle, Hinzel, Mayor and Emperor were handled well.
Good choreography by Patricia Robertson was evident throughout, especially in Salzkammergut.
Maghull are always able to field a good size men's chorus and this was noticeable in the balanced singing in the big productions numbers, well orchestrated by Edna Lally.
A very pleasant evening.
